A new trial of Viagra (sildenafil) and its generic alternatives is showing promising results.
New findings from the trial have shown the drug to be effective in men who have difficulty swallowing pills, particularly Viagra.
The trial, which was funded by Pfizer Inc, was conducted in more than 100 clinical sites around the country.
In one of the trials, participants were randomly assigned to take the drug or to take generic alternatives, which had the same active ingredient. Both treatments were approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
The drugs were tested on the participants' heart and blood pressure, as well as on a control group.
Researchers said the results were encouraging.
"While we have not previously demonstrated the efficacy of Viagra as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, it is very encouraging that we now see it as a very safe and effective treatment," said Dr. Andrew Goldberg, clinical director of Pfizer's research center in New York, based in London.
Viagra, sold by Pfizer under the brand name Sildenafil, is the active ingredient in the popular generic drug Viagra.
The trial, which was sponsored by the drug maker, showed that it significantly improved erectile function.
"In addition to the improved erectile function, the results of the study also showed that the treatment was associated with a modest increase in blood pressure (hypokalemia), which was associated with a modest increase in heart rate (heart failure), a decrease in blood pressure (hypooxygenation), and a decrease in blood pressure (myocardial infarction)."
The researchers also noted that Viagra was well tolerated.
Viagra, which is the active ingredient in Pfizer's erectile dysfunction drug, is approved for the treatment of about one million patients every year.
"Our findings provide further confirmation of the efficacy and safety of Viagra as a treatment for patients with erectile dysfunction," said Dr. Peter Stahl, clinical professor of urology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
In a separate trial, researchers also looked at how many men took the pills. The results, however, did not show a significant improvement in sexual function.
"It is not certain that we would be able to treat more men in this way," said Goldberg.
Dr. Michael Friedman, who conducted the trial, said the drug was well tolerated, with most men reporting no adverse events.
"We think this is very encouraging," Friedman said.
Sexual dysfunction is a serious medical condition that affects a large number of people worldwide. Although Viagra and similar medications are approved by the FDA to treat erectile dysfunction, they are not the only medications that are under scrutiny for their safety and efficacy in treating impotence.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, more than 15 million prescriptions for Viagra are written for consumers every year.
